How to Use Fumant Heat: Setup, Heat Control and Cleaning
Everything you need to get the best out of Fumant Heat, from packing and coal placement to the sliding plate, lid positions and cleaning.
To use Fumant Heat, pack your bowl, stretch the silicone base over the bowl so it grips firmly, load fully lit coals onto the sliding coal plate and set the heat with the plate and the lid. Fine-tune during the session by moving the plate or closing the lid partially or fully. Thanks to its double bottom, no aluminium foil is needed, and sessions of up to 2 hours without changing coals are possible, depending on coals, bowl and packing.
This guide doubles as the Fumant Heat manual.
Know your Fumant Heat
- Stainless steel body — holds the coals above the bowl.
- Double bottom — keeps the coals off the flavour, so no foil is needed.
- Sliding coal plate — your main heat adjustment, protected by a heat-insulating silicone ring.
- Lid — locks to the body, helps the coals last longer and can be partially or fully closed for extra heat control.
- Flexible silicone rubber base — heat-insulated, grabs the bowl firmly and keeps the HMD from falling. Fits most bowls on the market.
Before your first session
- Rinse the stainless steel parts with warm water, without detergent or soap, then dry them thoroughly.
- Check that the silicone base sits evenly around the body.
- Try the fit on your bowl while everything is cold. The base should grip the rim firmly, with the HMD sitting level.
- Move the sliding plate and open and close the lid a few times, so you know how they feel before they are hot.
Step 1: Pack the bowl
A light, fluffy pack is a good starting point with Fumant Heat, but some tobaccos need a different pack, so adjust it to what you are smoking. Keep the flavour slightly below the rim so it does not touch the bottom of the HMD. Clear any strands from the rim so the silicone base can grip cleanly. Heat fits most bowls on the market, so you can keep using your favourite; for very juicy flavours, a phunnel bowl helps keep juice out of the stem.
Step 2: Fit Fumant Heat to the bowl
The silicone base has to be stretched to go on. Put your fingers inside it and pull outwards to make it wider, fit it over the bowl, then let go: it stretches back and grabs the bowl. It should feel secure and sit level, with no wobble. The firm grip is what keeps Heat from falling, even when you adjust it mid-session.
Step 3: Place the coals
Heat natural coconut coals until they glow evenly and are covered with grey ash on all sides. With Heat on the bowl, use tongs to place the coals on the sliding coal plate, spreading them evenly so heat reaches the whole bowl. You can use three coals, then fine-tune the heat with the plate and lid.
Step 4: Set the heat with the sliding plate
The sliding coal plate is your main heat control. Moving it changes how much heat from the coals reaches the bowl, so you can raise or lower the temperature without touching the coals. The plate is protected by a heat-insulating silicone ring, so you can adjust it during the session.
- Make small moves rather than large ones.
- Give each adjustment a few puffs before judging the result.
- If the smoke turns harsh, reduce heat with the plate before reaching for the coals.
Step 5: Use the lid positions
The lid locks to the body, so it stays in place during the session, and it gives you a second level of heat control. It also helps the coals last longer.
- Open — full access to the coals for loading, checking or adding a coal.
- Partially closed — a middle setting for fine-tuning heat as the session develops.
- Fully closed — the strongest lid effect for heat control and coal life.
Combine the lid with the sliding plate to find the settings that suit your flavour, bowl and coals. Note what works for your favourite bowl so you can repeat it next time.
Handling Fumant Heat during the session
Fumant Heat is designed to be handled during the session. The heat-insulated silicone base, the silicone ring on the sliding plate and the insulated silicone handle let you adjust and move it without tongs. To change bowls, lift Heat by its silicone grip, keep it level with the coals inside and place it on the fresh bowl.
Step 6: Finish safely
- Lift the HMD off the bowl by its silicone grip.
- Dispose of the coals safely.
- Let Fumant Heat cool down completely.
- Store coals, lighters and the hookah out of reach of children.
Cleaning Fumant Heat
Regular cleaning keeps the sliding plate moving smoothly and stops ash building up in the bottom holes, which keeps airflow consistent.
- Make sure the HMD is completely cold.
- Tip out loose ash and rinse the coal plate and bottom holes with warm water. Do not use brushes.
- Wash the stainless steel parts in warm water. Do not use detergent or soap, and avoid abrasive pads that can scratch the finish.
- Wipe the silicone parts with a damp cloth.
- Dry everything thoroughly before storing.
If the silicone base ever wears out, a spare silicone base is available.
Troubleshooting
- Harsh or burnt taste — reduce heat with the plate or lid, remove a coal, or pack lighter and lower next time.
- Weak smoke — add heat with the plate or lid, check that the coals are fully lit and make sure the hookah's seals are tight.
- HMD feels loose on the bowl — clean the rim and stretch the base over it again. Heat fits most bowls, but very unusual shapes may not grip.
- Coals burning out quickly — close the lid partially or fully; it helps the coals last longer.
