Stainless Steel Hookah Guide: Durability, Draw and Purge
What makes stainless steel the material of choice for modern hookahs, and how to choose between an open and a restricted draw.
A stainless steel hookah is built for the long run: the material is strong, resists corrosion and is easy to clean, so the hookah keeps its look and performance through years of regular use. Beyond the material, the two things that most define how a hookah feels are its draw (open or restricted) and its purge. This guide explains all three, using Fumant Mist and Fumant Tapa 2.0, both 100% stainless steel and made in the EU, as examples.
Why stainless steel
Hookahs are made from brass, painted or coated steel, aluminium, wood and glass. Stainless steel has become the material of choice for premium hookahs because it combines several practical advantages:
- Durability — stainless steel is strong and resists corrosion, with no paint or coating to chip or wear off.
- Easy cleaning — a smooth, non-porous surface rinses clean and does not hold on to old flavours the way porous or coated materials can.
- Precision — steel can be machined to tight tolerances, which means good seals and a consistent draw.
- Stability — a solid metal body gives a well-balanced hookah that stands firmly.
- Design — polished and matte finishes age well and suit both home and lounge settings.
Open draw vs restricted draw
Draw describes how much resistance you feel when you inhale. It is shaped by the internal tube system, the valves, the diffuser and the hose, and choosing between the two is mostly a matter of preference.
Open draw
An open draw has little resistance, so inhaling feels close to breathing normally. It is easy and relaxed, produces clouds without effort and suits social sessions where the hose is passed around.
Restricted draw
A restricted draw has noticeable resistance, closer to drawing through a straw. Many experienced smokers prefer it because each pull is denser and more deliberate, and it is closer to the feel of a traditional hookah. The flavour is the same with an open or a restricted draw.
Neither is objectively better. Choose an open draw if you value an easy, airy pull, and a restricted draw if you want a denser, more deliberate pull, closer to a traditional hookah.
What is purge, and why it matters
Purge is clearing stale smoke from the vase by blowing gently into the hose. The air leaves through a one-way valve, so the next pull starts fresh. A good purge is quick and smooth, and on well-designed hookahs it becomes a visual feature in its own right.
Look for valves that seal reliably and stay in place. Secured ball valves, for example, keep the valve ball where it belongs during use, cleaning and transport.
Fumant Mist: compact, open draw, dishwasher safe
Fumant Mist is a compact, 100% stainless steel hookah for the tabletop or for travel. It has an open draw and a distinctive mist purge effect that tends to become the talking point of the session. Most of its parts store inside the base, so it fits even a small backpack, while the convenient hose connector and the threaded fixture on the bottom keep it practical. Cleaning is simple: Mist is dishwasher safe.
Mist comes with a soft-touch silicone hose, a 25 cm stainless steel mouthpiece and premium packaging, priced at €200.
Fumant Tapa 2.0: closed chamber, V-purge, adjustable draw
Fumant Tapa 2.0 is a 100% stainless steel hookah designed for a standard glass vase. It is built around a closed stainless steel chamber, secured ball valves and a V-shaped purge sleeve. The removable diffuser lets you adjust the draw: restricted without it, a bit more open with it.
- Precision-machined tube system.
- Removable diffuser to adjust the draw.
- Premium rubber grommet.
- Optional Caesar Crystal Bohemiae glass bases, or use your own standard vase.
- Polished finish from €200, or matte finish from €180.
For collectors, limited handmade resin sleeves by VM Handmade are available for Tapa.
Mist or Tapa: which should you choose?
- Choose Mist if you want an open draw, a compact hookah you can take anywhere and dishwasher-safe cleaning.
- Choose Tapa 2.0 if you prefer a restricted draw that opens up a little with the diffuser, a classic glass-vase look and a statement purge for the home or lounge.
Both pair well with a heat management device such as Fumant Heat. Lounges and retailers can find trade options on our professional page.
Caring for a stainless steel hookah
- Empty the vase after each session, then wash and dry it.
- Rinse the stem and hose connector with warm water, and brush the inside of the stem regularly to remove residue.
- Avoid soap and detergent: they can leave a fragrance that affects the flavour.
- On Tapa 2.0, remove the diffuser to clean it separately.
- Avoid abrasive pads on polished finishes.
- Dry all parts fully before reassembling or storing. Fumant Mist can also go in the dishwasher.
All Fumant hookahs are made in the EU and ship with DHL Express worldwide and returns within 30 days. See shipping and returns for details.
FAQ
Are stainless steel hookahs worth it?

What is the difference between open and restricted draw?
An open draw has little resistance and feels airy and easy. A restricted draw has noticeable resistance, giving denser, more deliberate pulls, closer to a traditional hookah. The flavour is the same with both. Fumant Mist has an open draw; Fumant Tapa 2.0 has a restricted draw that opens up a little with its removable diffuser.
What does purge mean on a hookah?
Purge is clearing stale smoke from the vase by blowing gently into the hose. The air leaves through a one-way valve, so the next pull starts fresh.
Is Fumant Mist dishwasher safe?
Yes. Fumant Mist is made from 100% stainless steel and is dishwasher safe.
Does Fumant Tapa 2.0 come with a glass base?
The glass base is optional. Tapa 2.0 is designed for a standard glass vase, so you can choose a Caesar Crystal Bohemiae base or use your own.
What is a good stainless steel hookah for travel?
Look for a compact design that packs down. Fumant Mist stores most of its parts inside its base and fits even a small backpack, making it a practical travel hookah.
